The RAJAR results were out today. These are the quarterly results that all commercial radio stations live and die for.
And for programme controllers across this once great nation, it feels a bit like having your exam results posted up on the gym wall for all to see and smirk at. read more…
The other day, a friend sent me a great YouTube video which shows the sound effects being made for the video game Dark Sector. The guys are in a studio with a range of different fruit and vegetables… and a claw hammer.
After a few minutes, they’re left with lots of mushy pulp - and some great audio.
It’s a fantastic illustration of how it’s often worth recording live sounds to get that perfect effect. read more…
If you are mature enough in years to own a few pre-CD recordings - maybe some vinyl or cassettes - when you get the chance just have a listen sometime. Then get a Beyonce track from somewhere - and play that as a comparison. read more…
I’m still having a love-hate relationship with my DAB radio.
Some days - I love it. At last! Stations from somewhere in a corner of Britain I’ve never been - never heard of and only ever listened to through nasty old medium wave - suddenly in crystal clear audio. A thrill to hear the whole radio network open up to me.
Some days - it’s a pesky piece of kit that’s already feeling a bit jaded! read more…
At the weekend, I insisted my wife be quiet as I listened to each and every ad break as we drove to Bournemouth. First on Southern FM in Brighton, through to Wave, Original 106, Ocean, back to Wave and finally 2CR where it stayed for the rest of the weekend. The reason for my diligence was that I was listening out for one of our ads. read more…
On Saturday, I was indoors with the radio on when I heard a commercial for a motor dealer. They were offering a 20% discount on all their cars for that weekend, to make way for new stock. The missus and I have been thinking about getting a new car for a couple of months now, so I was genuinely interested. You could say I was sold. They had me. I was putty in their hands. read more…
Given that the DAB had a nail squared significantly into its coffin when GCap pulled out of the DAB running last month, I wonder – just wonder if it’s going to (long term) go the way of Betamax.
Think about it – it’s already an ancient bit of kit (so old in fact that the technology is your equivalent of a 486 computer or less I should imagine) and it’s taken so so long to get to even the 5 million penetration mark.
And…. a quick stroll through your local electrical retailer and you’ll notice lurking in the corner a significant contender: the wireless internet radio. read more…
Radio is undergoing a revolution like never before. It’s amazing to think that the advent of the digital age has meant a complete sea change in the way in which we consume our media. Certainly radio has tried hard as an industry to keep up with that change – but may have to keep very light on its feet when it comes to adapting as the media landscape changes. read more…
Having spent 13 hours on a flight from Singapore to London watching movies and playing Battleships I arrived home at 8am this morning wide awake, as it was effectively 4 in the afternoon.
The thought of spending the rest of the day doing very little didn’t really appeal so I surprised the guys in the office by coming back a couple of days early. Plus we’re working on another interesting movie project, and it’s always good getting the production teeth into those. read more…
I’m smiling. Shall I tell you why?
Because I’ve just received an e-mail that reaffirms why I do what I do.
The e-mail in question was from a client saying that their radio advertising is working so well that they’re going to extend their 10 day campaign for another week and presumably, if it continues in the same vien, for another week after that.
You see, after eight years in the industry, it’s not nice sounding ads that get make me feel all warm and fuzzy, it isn’t clever puns and copy that brings a spring to my step, it’s ads that work and work and work. read more…
